Gamified JLPT Appfor Study Abroad Support

JLPT preparation can be difficult to sustain when learners rely mainly on books, classroom exercises, and repeated question practice. To address this, the client aimed to introduce a mobile app that could make Japanese learning more engaging while also supporting study abroad related operations. Newwave Solutions developed a gamified learning app that combined JLPT challenge mode, Japan location discovery, study request handling, WSDB integration and CMS based question management. The product gave learners a more interactive way to practice and gave the school a more flexible system to manage learning content and student information.

Client Context

The client is a Japanese language school in Japan that trains students preparing for study abroad.

Its learners needed regular JLPT practice, but traditional learning formats could feel repetitive and less motivating over time. The school also managed study abroad information that could become difficult to handle through manual workflows. Student requests, records and learning content needed to be easier to update, search and manage. This created a need for a mobile app that could support both learner engagement and school operations. By connecting with the World Students' Database, the app could also assist students' study abroad journey.

For the client, the app had to solve more than a digital learning requirement. It needed to make JLPT practice more engaging for students while giving the school a more reliable way to manage learning content, study abroad requests and student related information.

Student learning motivation

Traditional JLPT practice through books and classroom exercises could feel repetitive over time. Without a more interactive format and a clear structure across N5 to N1 levels and core skills, the app would struggle to support practical exam preparation and regular self-study outside class.

Study abroad requests handling

Student requests and study abroad related information were difficult to manage through manual workflows. This could increase the risk of missing information, slow lookup and inconsistent operational control.

Learning content management

The school needed to update questions and learning materials over time. Without CMS-based management, every content change could depend too heavily on technical support.

Japanese content accuracy

Ruby annotations and formatted explanations directly affected how learners read kanji and understood JLPT questions. If Japanese content was not displayed correctly, students could misunderstand the material and the school would need extra effort to fix content issues.

Our Approach

Newwave Solutions structured the app around two connected flows: the learner experience and the school operation flow. On the learner side, the team designed the app to make JLPT practice more interactive through challenge-based exercises by level and skill type, supported by Japan location discovery to make the learning journey feel more engaging. On the operation side, the product connected study abroad request handling, WSDB data flow and CMS based question management. This allowed the school to manage learning content and student related information more systematically, while reducing dependence on manual documents and repeated technical support for every content update.

Newwave Solutions delivered the project through a fixed price model with a 7-member team covering UI/UX, system design, development, and management. From the outset, the team aligned learning experience design with system architecture to keep student-facing features and backend operations connected. This was critical across JLPT practice, gamification, CMS management, study abroad requests, and WSDB integration. By treating the platform as both a learning product and an operational system, the team maintained consistency across complex modules while giving the client clearer control over daily school support and platform management.

Risk Handling

  • A key delivery risk was related to how Japanese learning content was displayed. JLPT questions typically involve multiple formats, structured explanations, and Ruby annotations for kanji. When these elements are not rendered correctly, it can lead to misunderstandings for learners and require additional effort from the school to review and fix content issues. To address this, Newwave Solutions implemented backend-controlled HTML rendering along with custom handling for Ruby content. This approach ensured more accurate presentation of learning materials while still allowing questions and content to be efficiently managed and updated through the CMS.

The app created a stronger reason for learners to continue JLPT practice outside class. Challenge based exercises and Japan discovery content connected self study with real study abroad goals, making the learning experience more relevant to students preparing for life in Japan.

Operationally, the school gained a more structured way to manage study abroad requests, student information and related records through the app and WSDB integration. Manual workflows became less central to daily support, while key student information could be handled with better visibility and control.

The CMS also reduced the school’s dependence on developers for ongoing content updates. JLPT questions, explanations, news, Japan life content and notifications could be managed more independently. Over time, the app became a long term channel for learning support, student communication and study abroad operations.
